COVID-19 and the 2020 Census

Historically, Black communities have been disproportionately affected by national crises in this country: Hurricane Katrina, the economic crisis of 2008, and the Coronavirus pandemic is no different. We must do everything we can to protect ourselves and our communities. It’s important to have our voices heard by participating in the 2020 Census.

The 2010 Census undercounted Black communities by more than 800,000, and about 7 percent of young Black children were overlooked in the 2010 Census. This 2010 undercount affects the resources our community receives now during the Coronavirus.

This is MAJOR because Census data is used to fund so many programs that affect our quality of life like SNAP, unemployment insurance, Medicaid, affordable housing/Section 8, school lunch programs, and many others.

We’re all in this together. We are working rapidly to keep our state healthy, financially and physically. We can’t allow COVID-19 to take away our economic and political power.

Take the census now. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Take care of one another.

Be Represented! Your Count Matters.
